Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. In her early years, DuVernay's Aunt Denise inspired her love of artistic expression and creative thinking. Aunt Denise worked the night shift in the role of a nurse so that she could continue her passion for art literature and theater throughout the day. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was taught by her mother that the arts can serve to promote activism. DuVernay had a mother who was conscious of her social status and taught her how to use art as a method to express her feelings. DuVernay lived in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born, and raised. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historic civil rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent community of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would make use of the summers she was in Selma to help inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. Following graduation, she went to her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she was awarded degrees in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay began producing content to broadcast journalism while she was still at college. DuVernay began her career working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked investigate the waste at the home of one of the jury. Her work left her dissatisfied in journalism, so she decided to pursue a career in the public relations industry. DuVernay was hired right from college to be the junior publicist for an unassuming studio. In 1999, she founded her own company of public relations, dubbed The DuVernay Agency. The agency was the first to launch a variety different lifestyle and promotional networks such as Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
