Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, born in Long Beach California. DuVernay was raised by her aunt Denise and her mother, who pushed DuVernay to develop her creativity and was attracted by the arts. Aunt Denise was a nurse who worked night shifts so she could spend the day to literature, art, theater and other interests. She showed DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay recognized that art is an effective way to spread activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother who was a social conscience, and encouraged DuVernay to be creative and express herself through art. Although DuVernay grew up in Compton with her parents, she always spent summers in Lowndes County Alabama where her dad's family was a part of the same for several generations. Her father was awed by the historic Civil Rights protest across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would use the summers that she spent in the state to stimulate her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. The school was home to University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English along with African American Studies. DuVernay began producing for broadcast journalism while she was still at the college. She started as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to look over the rubbish inside the home by a member jury. Her duties left her unhappy with journalism so she decided to pursue a career in the public relations sector. DuVernay got her first job as a PR professional in small production studios right after her graduation. She was promoted to the position and set up her own PR company known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Her agency launched a number of networks for promotion and lifestyle, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
